Ingredient Of The Month: Tea Tree

Also known as Melaleuca, tea tree is considered a medicinal plant in many cultures. Rightly so, as it boasts numerous benefits – like as a natural deodorant, insect repellent, and antiseptic for minor cuts and scrapes. It does, however, also boast numerous advantages when used in skincare. Especially on oily and acne-prone skin.

Before we tell you why it’s so good, it’s important to understand what makes it so good. Tea tree naturally contains a number of compounds that have been shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It’s also said that one of these compounds – terpinen-4-ol – boosts the activity of your body’s white blood cells, thus fighting germs and other foreign invaders.

Finally, don’t start cutting up your oolong tea bags to use in replacement as your skincare. The melaleuca alternifolia – or tea tree – isn’t the same plant used to produce black and green teas. Instead, find it in our Black Tea Blemish Banish Serum and Blemish Control Clarifying Cream-In-Gel. Now, as promised, here’s why it’s so amazing:

Fight zits

One study suggests that tea tree oil is as effective as benzoyl peroxide – a common acne medication – while several studies have shown that tea tree is a powerful weapon against acne. By using tea tree topically, its germ-fighting properties can actively treat pimples while also preventing future breakouts. This double action is exactly the kind of thing anyone with oily or acne-prone skin needs.

Soothes skin inflammation

Now, because tea tree is so strong in fighting bacteria, you may think that it’s astringent. However, it’s really a gentle plant when used in the right amounts. Tea tree is also anti-inflammatory, providing relief to painful and irritated skin. There’s even been research studying the various effects of contact dermatitis, and tea tree oil was found to reduce symptoms by a whopping 40 per cent! That’s significantly more than other standard medications applied to the skin.

What all this means is that while you may have itchy fingers and want to pop your pimples, this naturally soothing ingredient will reduce the redness and swelling. Not that we’re encouraging you to start popping your zits. Please don’t. Just head over here and check out our Anti-Acne Solutions instead.
